Install In the Margins

About five minutes. You need Lightroom Classic 12 or later, on macOS 12 or later or Windows 10 (64-bit) or later. Running the AI on your own Mac also needs an Apple Silicon Mac.

Step 1

Download

When you start the free trial or buy a license, Polar emails you a download link. Download the zip file.

Step 2

Unzip it and put it somewhere permanent

Double-click the zip. You get a folder called InTheMargins.lrplugin. On a Mac it may look like a single file, which is normal.

Move it somewhere it can stay, such as your Documents or Applications folder. Lightroom loads it from there every time it starts, so don’t leave it in Downloads.

Step 3

Add it to Lightroom

In Lightroom Classic:

  1. Choose File › Plug-in Manager.

  2. Click Add (bottom left), select the InTheMargins.lrplugin folder and confirm.

  3. In the Margins appears in the list as Installed and running. Its settings are on the right.

Step 4

Connect an AI

Still in the Plug-in Manager, set up one of these. You can set up both and choose each time you run it.

Claude (recommended). You pay Anthropic directly for what you use, about 13¢ per 1,000 photos in Batch mode.

  1. Go to console.anthropic.com and create an account.

  2. Under Billing, add some credit. A few dollars covers thousands of photos.

  3. Under API Keys, click Create Key and copy it.

  4. Paste it into API Key in the Claude API section of the Plug-in Manager.

On your Mac (free). Nothing leaves your computer. Best on bright, daytime photos.

  1. Install the free Osaurus app (github.com/dinoki-ai/osaurus) and download the Gemma 4 26B model in it.

  2. Keep Osaurus open, then click Refresh next to Osaurus model and pick the model.

The Local mode section of the In the Margins settings.

“Osaurus is not running” goes away once the app is open and you click Refresh.

Step 5

Activate your license

The free trial needs nothing: it starts the first time you use the plug-in. After you buy, Polar emails you a license key. Paste it into License key at the top of the Plug-in Manager and click Activate. The key is checked once, then never again.

Step 6

Check it works

Select one photo in the Library and choose Library › Plug-in Extras › Keyword Selected Photos… Pick Instant (or Local) and click Run. Keywords appear on the photo within seconds.

Updating and help

If something isn’t right:

  • Updating: quit Lightroom, replace the old InTheMargins.lrplugin folder with the new one in the same place, and start Lightroom again. Your settings and progress carry over.

  • No Plug-in Extras menu? Make sure you’re in the Library module. In the Plug-in Manager, In the Margins should say Installed and running. If it says Disabled, select it and click Enable.

  • “Set an Anthropic API key in the Plugin Manager first”: do the Claude steps in step 4, or choose Local mode.

  • Anything else: email support@fododoto.com with what you were doing and, if you can, a screenshot of the message.

In the Margins is not affiliated with Adobe or Anthropic.
